SERVICE UNIFORM JACKET – PRIVATE – 88TH INFANTRY DIVISION BLUE DEVILS – 5TH ARMY<\/p>\n
The\u00a088th Infantry Division\u00a0was an\u00a0infantry\u00a0division\u00a0of the\u00a0United States Army\u00a0that saw service in both\u00a0World War I\u00a0and\u00a0World War II. It was one of the first of the\u00a0Organized Reserve\u00a0divisions to be called into federal service, created nearly „from scratch“ after the\u00a0implementation of the draft\u00a0in 1940. Previous divisions were composed of either\u00a0Regular Army\u00a0or\u00a0National Guard\u00a0personnel. Much of the experience in reactivating it was used in the subsequent expansion of the U.S. Army.<\/p>\n
By the end of World War II the 88th Infantry fought its way to the northernmost extreme of Italy. In early May 1945 troops of its 349th Infantry Regiment joined the\u00a0103d Infantry Division\u00a0of the\u00a0VI Corps\u00a0of the\u00a0U.S. Seventh Army, part of the\u00a06th Army Group, which had raced south through Bavaria into\u00a0Innsbruck, Austria, in\u00a0Vipiteno\u00a0in the Italian Alps.<\/p>\n
U.S. Army basic service uniforms consisted of a winter service uniform of\u00a0olive drab\u00a0wool worn in temperate weather, and a summer service uniform of\u00a0khaki\u00a0cotton fabric worn in tropical weather. In addition to the service uniforms worn for ordinary duty and dress purposes there were a variety of fatigue and combat uniforms. Summer and winter service uniforms were worn during their respective seasons in the continental United States. During the war, the European Theater of Operations (Northwestern Europe) was considered a year-round temperate zone and the Pacific Theater of Operations a year-round tropical uniform zone. In the Mediterranean Theater of Operations, U.S. soldiers wore both seasonal uniforms.<\/p>\n
