Fotoalbum of a German Veteran in Grenadier Regiment 554including pictures of a Knight’s Cross awarded officer in Stalingrad

Hauptmann D. L. Friedrich Kimmich, Army (Heer), Major of the Landwehr, Leader of the II./Grenadier-Regiment 554 (Major d. Landwehr Fhr. II./G. R. 554) was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross on the 11th of December 1942 by General der Infanterie Kurt von der Chevallerie, to recognize extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Kimmich’s Knights Cross was awarded in the heat of battle in Stalingrad. The following newspaper excerpt (dated 17.12.1942) describes why Kimmich received the Knight’s Cross… “Major der Landwehr Kimmich and his Grenadier-Bataillon stormed a strongly fortified and heavily defended enemy hill. Those determined Bolshevik counterattacks that followed were crushed in the face of the inspiring leadership of the commander and the bravery of his Grenadiers. This action took place in the central section of the Eastern front at the end of this past September.” Kimmich was born on July 13th, 1890. He survived the end of the war and more  until October 20th, 1962.
