The\u00a0Expedition of the Thousand\u00a0(Italian:\u00a0Spedizione dei Mille<\/i>) was an event of the Italian\u00a0Risorgimento\u00a0that took place in 1860. A corps of volunteers led by\u00a0Giuseppe Garibaldi\u00a0sailed from Quarto, near\u00a0Genoa\u00a0(now\u00a0Quarto dei Mille) and landed in\u00a0Marsala,\u00a0Sicily, in order to conquer the\u00a0Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, ruled by the\u00a0House of Bourbon-Two Sicilies.<\/span><\/p>\n The project was an ambitious and risky venture aiming to conquer, with a thousand men, a kingdom with a larger regular army and a more powerful navy. The expedition was a success and concluded with a\u00a0plebiscite\u00a0that brought\u00a0Naples\u00a0and Sicily into the\u00a0Kingdom of Sardinia, the last territorial conquest before the\u00a0proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy\u00a0on 17 March 1861.<\/span><\/p>\n The sea venture was the only desired action that was jointly decided by the “four fathers of the nation”\u00a0Giuseppe Mazzini, Giuseppe Garibaldi,\u00a0Victor Emmanuel II, and\u00a0Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, pursuing divergent goals. However, the Expedition was instigated by\u00a0Francesco Crispi, who utilized his political influence to bolster the\u00a0Italian unification\u00a0project. <\/span><\/p>\n The various groups participated in the expedition for a variety of reasons: for Garibaldi, it was to achieve a united Italy; to the Sicilian bourgeoisie, an independent Sicily as part of the Kingdom of Italy, and for common people, land distribution and the end of oppression.<\/span><\/p>\n The expedition and the whole enterprise was heavily supported by the British, who wanted to establish a friendly government in Southern Italy, which was becoming of great strategic value because of the imminent opening of the\u00a0Suez Canal. The Bourbons were considered unreliable due to their increasing openings towards the\u00a0Russian Empire.
